How a Major Pro-Life Group Wants to Gut the Republican Platform on Protecting Babies

Texas Alliance for Life is working to gut the Republican Party of Texas platform of its equal protection stance

Texas Alliance for Life is trying to use “compassion” as a smokescreen to rip equal protection for preborn babies from the Republican Party of Texas Platform.

Texas Christians have worked hard for years to honor God by strengthening the Republican Party of Texas Platform on equally protecting preborn babies and abolishing abortion.

But a major Pro-Life establishment group, which has long opposed even some of the weakest anti-abortion legislative efforts in Texas as overly strong, is threatening to undo this historic progress.

Texas Alliance for Life recently unveiled a series of “Pro-Life Resolutions” that would actually rip out strong language and hamstring the RPT Platform on abortion. They also announced what they call a “Comprehensive Compassionate Pro-Life Legislative Priority” which would discourage Texas lawmakers from establishing equal protection of the laws for preborn babies and abolishing abortion in our state.

 

The delegates and alternates attending the Republican Party of Texas Convention this year should be aware of how Texas Alliance for Life is trying to deceive you into supporting language that would harm preborn babies by actively weakening the RPT Platform on abolishing abortion.

Why the So-Called “Pro-Life Resolutions” Are Anti-Life

Texas Alliance for Life is peddling “Pro-Life Resolutions” marketed as protecting preborn babies, but which would instead remove the strongest anti-abortion language from the RPT Platform.

The so-called “Resolution on Compassionate Protection of Innocent Human Life” would repeal and replace Plank 23 of the 2024 RPT Platform. Plank 23 currently says:

We urge lawmakers to enact legislation to abolish abortion by immediately securing the right to life and equal protection of the laws to all preborn children from the moment of fertilization, because abortion violates the United States Constitution by denying such persons the equal protection of the law.” (2024 RPT Platform Plank 23)

But Texas Alliance for Life does not only want to replace this language. They want the RPT Platform to explicitly oppose “criminal penalties against women for abortion,” ensuring that women in Texas can willfully murder their preborn babies for any reason with complete legal immunity.

There are currently 30,000 preborn babies murdered each year on Texas soil by their own mothers. This resolution from Texas Alliance for Life would help ensure the bloodshed continues.

Texas Alliance for Life has also proposed a “Resolution to Amend the 2024 RPT Platform Plank 97,” which calls for Texas students to learn about the humanity and dignity of preborn babies.

But Texas Alliance for Life is shamefully trying to use their amendment to subversively remove current language from Plank 97 affirming that Texas children should learn about:

The principles of equal protection that were instituted in the Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution that ‘We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness,’ as well as that ‘no State shall deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.’” (2024 RPT Platform Plank 97)

Texas Alliance for Life, in other words, wants to celebrate the 250th year of our independence by making students ignorant of the strongest human rights language in our founding documents.

This disgraceful stance against the Declaration of Independence, the United States Constitution, and the Fourteenth Amendment reveals how Texas Alliance for Life shockingly opposes extending the liberties protected by our founding documents to preborn babies.

Finally, Texas Alliance for Life proposed a “Resolution to Replace the 2024 RPT Platform with a New Plank 195.”

Plank 195 is presently the strongest call in the RPT Platform for the abolition of abortion and protection of preborn babies. Plank 195 currently says:

We urge the Texas Legislature to enact legislation to abolish abortion by immediately securing the right to life and equal protection of the laws to all preborn children from the moment of fertilization and to oppose legislation that discriminates against any preborn children and violates the United States Constitution by denying such persons equal protection of the laws, and to adopt effective tools to ensure the enforcement of our laws to protect life when doctors or district attorneys fail to do so.” (2024 RPT Platform Plank 195)

But the resolution from Texas Alliance for Life would repeal and replace this language with a much weaker call to support the Thriving Texas Families Program, which offers material support to women in need. While efforts to support needy mothers are important, Texas Alliance for Life wants to affirm this work instead of supporting equal protection of the laws for preborn babies in the state of Texas.

If these resolutions are approved by delegates and alternates, the RPT Platform will be significantly weakened on protecting preborn babies from abortion.

Why the So-Called “Compassionate Pro-Life Priority” Hurts Preborn Babies

Texas Alliance for Life is also proposing a deceptively named “Comprehensive Compassionate Pro-Life Legislative Priority” that would ensure Texas lawmakers cannot abolish abortion.

While the proposal calls for targeting abortion pill providers, helping pregnancy centers, and promoting education about human life, the language also includes a call for “opposing criminal penalties for women seeking or who have obtained an abortion.” Instead of promoting a culture of life, this component would discourage Texas lawmakers from passing equal protection of the laws for preborn babies and closing loopholes keeping abortion completely legal for women.

Texas law currently grants every woman who willfully has an abortion complete immunity. We have not abolished abortion because murdering preborn babies remains legal for women at any point in the pregnancy without exception. This loophole allows abusers and sex traffickers to pressure women into abortions, and opposing equal protection only enables their cruelty.

Instead of showing “compassion” for preborn babies, and women vulnerable to coercion, the proposal from Texas Alliance for Life would leave at least 30,000 preborn babies and their mothers open to attack in Texas every single year. Texas Alliance for Life is working to discourage equal protection, the only policy that would protect preborn babies by truly abolishing abortion.

What the RPT Convention Should Do Instead

Republican Party of Texas delegates and alternates should not support these subversive efforts to weaken our commitments on equally protecting preborn babies and abolishing abortion. They should instead support abolishing abortion as a 2026 legislative priority.

We have not yet abolished abortion in Texas and abortion numbers are rising. In order to truly abolish abortion, the same laws against murder that already protect born people should also protect preborn babies, because we are all equally made in the image of God.

The delegates and alternates should reject any effort to dilute our commitments to equally protecting preborn babies, standing firmly on the need to finally abolish abortion in Texas.
