The full story
Texas Republicans had a chance to abolish abortion once and for all. But they rejected that chance because a Pro-Life group opposed the effort.

This is the shocking but true story of how Texas Alliance for Life, a leading Pro-Life group, opposed abolishing abortion.
In Texas, there are still over 25,000 babies legally murdered each year on Texas soil. That is because current Pro-Life laws keep self-induced abortions legal for women.

On April 22, 2025, members of the Texas House Criminal Jurisprudence Committee were scheduled to hear testimony on House Bill 2197 to abolish abortion in Texas.
Filed by Texas State Rep. Brent Money, the bill would have provided equal protection of the laws for preborn children, protecting their lives with the same homicide and assault laws that already protect the lives of everyone else.
If we say preborn people are human beings made in the image of God, should they not receive the same legal protections as people who have already been born?
The bill also would have protected pregnant women from coercion.

All of that is biblical, constitutional, and logical, which is exactly why no less than 20 members of the Texas House signed on as initial co-authors for House Bill 2197. Key grassroots leaders rallied behind the bill as well.
Despite this support, mere hours before the hearing on House Bill 2197 was supposed to start, the committee chairman, Texas State Rep. John Smithee, suddenly canceled the hearing.
Texas Alliance for Life opposed equal protection
Rep. Smithee himself reportedly explained that Texas Alliance for Life had met with him and asked that he withdraw the bill from the scheduled hearing. After talking with the office of Texas House Speaker Dustin Burrows, that is exactly what he did.
Texas Alliance for Life, a leading Pro-Life group in Texas, pressured Rep. Smithee, a Republican, to pull the bill to abolish abortion.
You would think a group claiming to be working to end abortion would be thrilled to support a bill like this, but Texas Alliance for Life campaigned hard against the bill.
They not only met with Rep. Smithee. They were contacting people across the state, asking them to submit testimony against the bill and telling them to urge their lawmakers to oppose the effort.
Even after the bill hearing was canceled, Joe Pojman, the executive director of Texas Alliance for Life, began contacting co-authors of House Bill 2197 to ask them to withdraw their names. A few yielded to the pressure, but most of them refused.
Planned Parenthood celebrated alongside Texas Alliance for Life
Once the hearing was killed, Texas Alliance for Life celebrated, and none other than Planned Parenthood started celebrating right alongside them.
Because the bill never received a hearing, Texas House Bill 2197 is now dead.

Texas babies were denied the equal protection of the laws
To be clear, the bill would have simply applied the existing penal code to anyone who intentionally harmed a preborn baby.
Despite what Texas Alliance for Life would have people believe, the bill did not target women. House Bill 2197 targeted the act of abortion, no matter who willfully takes part in that act.
The bill would have codified the truth that murdering anyone should be illegal for everyone.
But since Texas Alliance for Life believes that all women are second victims of abortion and should be offered legal immunity to abort, they opposed House Bill 2197.
In the process, they denied all preborn babies equal protection, and left all of them vulnerable to being slaughtered.
This keeps happening, but you can help stop it
This is a story that has played out many times across the country: Christians try to love their preborn neighbors as themselves by supporting equal protection, then the Pro-Life establishment opposes their efforts and tells Republican lawmakers to do the same.
But the good news is that there is real momentum happening in favor of abolition, no matter what desperate political games the Pro-Life groups try to play.
There has never been more support for abolishing abortion in Texas than this session. That is true for countless other states across the country.
Christians and their elected officials are seeing that equal protection is the way forward.
We will not stop working to make that happen. No matter who stands in the way, we will stand on the Word of God and work in the strength of Jesus Christ to end child sacrifice.
Join us. Become an abolitionist. We need you, and more importantly, your preborn neighbor needs you.
Please also stop supporting anti-abolitionist organizations like Texas Alliance for Life, and tell your friends to do the same.
